Ben Spies
Ben Spies was pumped, he just didn't show it. Seems he never does, even when he wins.
But his first MotoGP race win in the Dutch TT at Assen was the biggest moment of his career, of that there was no doubt -- surpassing even his 2009 Superbike World Championship.
Childhood dreams have become a cliché in sport but with Spies, his first Grand Prix win carrying the 50th anniversary race colors of the Yamaha factory team, was just that.It came at the iconic Assen circuit, the once public road course now widely worshiped as a cathedral of speed.
"This is the track I always watched when I was a kid, in the early 1990s," said Spies as he recalled watching Rainey, Doohan, and Schwantz do battle here.
"To win here for Yamaha at the oldest circuit on the calendar is super special. This is my biggest win and it will take some days to understand it all, but to win a MotoGP race here after watching as a kid is all I ever wanted to do.
"Riding for a factory team and winning races is as good as it gets and now I want to try and do it a again."
That opportunity comes next week when Spies goes to Mugello for the Italian GP, Round 8 of the '11 championship that is quickly approaching July's mid-point at Laguna Seca.
Any repeat of the nerveless and superlative performance Assen will soon see Spies adding to his win
